8 Things to do in Cape Town this summer

Summer is here and that means embracing the great outdoors! If you are a local or visiting Cape Town this summer, make sure to take advantage of some of the following experiences the Mother City has to offer:

  1. Attend a Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concert

Every year a variety of local artists perform at Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden’s Summer Sunset Concerts on Sundays. Concert attendees can enjoy a picnic with a bottle of wine while listening to the sounds of Beatenberg, Lira, The Soil and more! Click here to view the full line-up and to book your ticket.

  1. Visit a Blue Flag Beach

The Western Cape currently has 29 Blue Flag Beaches. According to the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa who manages the Blue Flag programme in SA, “Blue Flag is an international annual award given to beaches that meet a standard of excellence in the areas of safety, amenities, cleanliness, environmental information and environmental management.” Read more about Blue Flag beaches and all of SA’s beaches who made the list here. Camps Bay is my favourite pick. It has scenic mountain views, sand, grass and cool restaurants where you can have a drink or grab a bite to eat.

  1. Visit a market

Cape Town has a variety of local markets that one can visit throughout the year but this time of the year festive markets are popular. Skip full malls, long queues and frustrating searches for parking spots this festive season and do your Christmas gift shopping at one of these festive markets.

  1. Watch a movie under the stars

The Galileo Open Air Cinema is another annual favourite that Capetonians get to enjoy in summer. The open air cinema offers a unique outdoor movie experience where you can watch your favourite movie on a picnic blanket while indulging in artisanal food and drinks. Click here to view this summer’s movie line-up.

BONUS: If you are a Pick n Pay Smart Shopper you can get 2 Galileo movie tickets for the price of 1 (limited discounted web tickets offers available).

  1. Do Beer tasting

There is nothing better than a cold one on a hot summer’s day. Affordable beer tastings and brewery tours are available at SAB Newlands Brewery, CBC Brewery at Spice Route in Paarl or Stellenbrau Brewery in Stellenbosch.

  1. Try a freakshake

If you don’t drink alcohol, you can cool down by trying out a freakshake. Freakshakes are all the rage right now. They are monstrous milkshakes that are topped with syrup, cookies, sweets and sometimes even doughnuts and cake! I recommend trying RocoMamas.

  1. Have a picnic

Cape Town has many picnic spots to choose from. You can either have a picnic at wine estates such as Boschendal, Rhebokskloof, Warwick or places like Kirstenbosch, Green Point Park, Sea Point promenade and the Company’s Garden.

  1. Ride a bike

Hire a bike at Up Cycle and enjoy a bike ride around Cape Town. Up Cycle has stations at The Pavilion on the Sea Point Promenade, Clock Tower Square at the V&A Waterfront, Breakaway Café on the Waterkant Street Fan Walk, in the city centre and Camps Bay, at the Bay Hotel on the Victoria Road strip.
